These are outstanding, and you can feel it the second you pick one up. The adjustment is the first thing that sells you. Channel-locks make you slip the joint apart and slide the jaws, hunting for the next slot. The Cobra has a spring-loaded button: push it, slide the jaw exactly where you want, and it locks in solid. The 10 inch has a 25-position fine adjustment, so you dial in the perfect bite for the job instead of settling for the closest slot. A traditional slip-joint that size gives you eight or ten.

The jaw design is what makes them grip like nothing else. There are three zones. Up front, a ground flat with fine teeth that run all the way to the edge, so you get a strong hold on something small or barely protruding. The center has coarse teeth in a wider opening that bite hard on bigger stock. The back has another set of fine teeth, and the top jaw’s teeth are rounded just enough to grab round items without the coarse center chewing them up. The steel is hard and the teeth are sharp, so they will leave a mark, but they will not slip once you’ve got a grip. That’s as much a feature as a drawback.

Fit and finish is excellent, down to the handle dip: textured, a little soft, and tough. The dipped grip is the first thing that falls off a cheap pair of pliers, and I have yet to have a Knipex deteriorate there. I’ve got sets with six to eight years of heavy use that, apart from grease worked into the handles, look like new. A few sizes of these and the Pliers Wrenches will replace a whole drawer of adjustable wrenches and pliers.
